Dr. Gustavo Woltmann: The Shrink to the Shrunken
My name is Gustavo Woltmann, and I help people of all ages battle away the struggle of eating disorders. I am a psychologist based in Rio de Janeiro who used to specialize in paranoid schizophrenia, but a tragic string of events related to eating disorders made me realize I was needed elsewhere. I have written a book on this subject called “Eat Your Heart Out: A Journey to the Abyss and Back” (Portuguese: “Coma Tudo: Ao Fundo do Poço, De Ida e Volta”) and it has recently been named a bestseller in Brazil.
Understanding eating disorders
Eating disorders are not exclusive to rich teenagers in first world countries. People usually fail to understand how this is a real problem many people face under many different situations. The media always focuses on models with anorexia and the teenagers who want to look like them, but behind the headlines there is a much darker side to eating disorders that few people want to talk about.
The realities of eating disorders
Of course, many people instantly wanted to blame the rise of this problem on the fashion industry.
However, the reality is much deeper than skinny models and images in magazines. Besides, even if it was, I firmly believe pointing fingers at any one entity is not how we help our young women anyway. This problem is much more complex than that.
Remember, it is not just women who suffer from eating disorders. Many boys and men are falling victims of this too, and the reasons are various.
After the rise of eating disorders in Brazil, I took interest in taking my background studying Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and seeing where I could find a connection with Anorexia Nervosa. Eating disorders are very often a symptom or a result of something you may be struggling with.
I have reported a boom in my business since the publication of “Eat Your Heart Out: A Journey to the Abyss and Back”, and I have been asked to appear on several television shows explaining my work. I am grateful to the media for giving the solution as much attention as the problem.
If you or someone you love is struggling with an eating disorder, please get in touch so we can work together to overcome this.
